Welcome to Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate

Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate Charter School is a free, public middle school located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bed-Stuy. Students have the opportunity to attend our middle school for grades 5 to 8, and continue on to an Uncommon high school for grades 9 to 12.

Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate is a free, public middle school that opened in Brooklyn in August 2008.

Grades 5-8

We are a middle school serving grades 5 to 8. Scholars attend an Uncommon high school starting in 9th grade.

Transportation

Yellow bus service is provided and determined by the Department of Education Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT).

We provide all students with a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for college and beyond. We have a longer school day and school year to allow for more learning time, and provide after-school tutoring to ensure that all of our students meet our high academic expectations.

A Typical School Day

Uncommon Schools NYC provides students with an education experience that combines joy, rigor, and hard work every day. Students are taught that hard work is a prerequisite for success. Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate ensures that all students receive a well-rounded education that will prepare them for success in high school, as well as college and beyond.

Emphasis on College

Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate begins educating students about the importance of college from day one and continues doing so through college readiness activities found in middle and high school. The goal is for freshman year of college to become a natural extension of graduating from high school.

Longer School Day and Year

To ensure that every student masters each and every standard, we provide students with a longer school day and longer year. We also provide homework help and after-school tutoring, and extra periods of English and Math weekly.

Structure and Order

Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate provides its students with a calm, safe, and orderly environment to maximize learning time. All students wear uniforms, and receive constant feedback for continuous academic and self-development.

Targeted Curriculum and Assessment

Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate develops its curriculum directly from the New York State Learning Standards that ensures students master a core set of basic academic skills before mastering higher-level material. We also use internally developed assessments to build a culture of continuous reflection and improvement.

Enrichment and Athletics

We provide our students with opportunities to participate in a variety of enrichment and after-school activities, including basketball, cheerleading, soccer, and football.

Partnering with Families

We hold families—our most important community partners—to high expectations, and we assume that they will hold us to equally high standards. Families ensure that their children arrive at school on time every day, in uniform, and ready to learn. Families check that students complete their homework each night. They support the school in enforcing the Code of Conduct. Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate communicates with families frequently to share successes and discuss challenges.
